Pokémon Red & Green

Japanese Release Date: February 27, 1996
American Release Date: NA

Pokémon Green, along with the original Pokémon Red, were the first Pokémon games to be released in Japan, way back in 1996. When the games came overseas, however, they were released as Pokémon Red and Blue, and they utilized the game engine that Pokémon Blue (released as an updated version of Green and Red in Japan) used. Why? Well, the company thought that the western population might take better to the two opposing colors being Red and Blue, as they are usually thought of as clashing.

Sadly, Pokémon Green was never released outside of Japan. However, a light did shine on it when the remakes of Pokémon Red and Green (FireRed and LeafGreen) were released on the GameBoy Advance. While many western audiences were confused as to why Green was used instead of Blue, it was an excellent throwback to the original Pokémon Red and Green games, both of which never saw the shores of the United States.

The original Pokémon Red and the American Pokémon Red are two seperate games, which should not be confused with one another. While the American version of Red did use the same Pokémon data as the original, the games themselves do not run on the same engine (as the American edition of Red uses the Japanese edition of Blue. For more information, please view the Pokémon Blue (Jp) page).
